Yvonne Jonsson (19), daughter of a Swedish father and a Sri Lankan mother was murdered at the luxury Royal Park Condominium at Rajagiriya on July 02, 2005. She was battered and strangled to death outside her apartment. The incident happened on the 19th floor of the apartment around 2.00 a.m. when everyone was fast asleep. The incident triggered a chain of events which ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect. He was arrested by CID officers at his residence at Bagatale Road.
When Jayamaha was convicted in the High Court and sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 50,000 on July 20, 2006, the convict appealed against that judgment to the Court of Appeal. In a separate appeal to the CA, the Attorney General sought an enhanced punishment to the convict. The Court of Appeal on July 11, 2012 while rejecting the appeal of Jayamaha imposed the enhanced punishment of death sentence sought by the AG.
Against the death sentence the convict thereupon appealed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court too rejected his appeal on October 22, 2013.
High Court Judge Ranawaka in reading out the sentence also ordered the Welikada prison Superintendent to ensure his safety in the penitentiary pending the implementation of the death penalty.
