Special Crime Investigations Unit, Mirihana led by its Officer In Charge, Chief Inspector, Nimal Karunaratne on Tuesday arrested two suspects with the largest ever haul of robbed gold from a pawning centre in Moratumulla on May 25.The suspects had gained entry into the shop through a hole they made on a wall.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the team had been deployed by Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sumith Edirisinghe following a complaint he received on May 30 from the owner of the Palliyaguru Pawning Centre in Moratumulla.

The suspects aged 43 and 27 from Moratumulla had stolen 11 kilos and 465 grammes of gold on that day according to the complaint.

Police recovered nine kilos of gold worth Rs. 50 million from two pawning centres in Dickwella and Weligama. The suspects had sold them after melting.
