Acting on information elicited from suspects caught with small amounts of heroin, Borella police have arrested eight suspects including two women with nine kilos of heroin with a street value of Rs. 63 million at Wanathamulla.
The heroin detected by a six-member police team led by Officer-in-Charge, Chief Inspector Sarath Premachandra is the biggest drug haul taken into custody by the police in
recent times.
The main suspect arrested with his girlfriend, whose elder sister allegedly offered the police a bribe of Rs. 5.2 mn to secure their release.
The police said they would seek a court order to freeze the suspects’ bank accounts.
The main suspect was to get married on Friday (July 18) and all the wedding cards had been printed and distributed, according to the police.
The suspects were arrested in different raids conducted by the police after one suspect had been taken into custody near the Saravanamuthu Cricket ground a few days back with 3.5 g of heroin.
Police are still looking for a drug baron known as ‘Podi Sudu’, and a relative of the main suspect. According to the police ‘Podi Sudu’ had supplied the entire stock of heroin to the main suspect.
Police investigations have revealed that the main suspect’s girlfriend living in the same area had two and a half kilos of heroin hidden inside a sound setup at her home.
The main suspect known as ‘Dinush’ had hidden most of the heroin weighing seven kilos in packets of large quantities inside concrete slabs and flower pots.
