Doc speaks from custody
Dr Nimal Gamage, head of the beauty Clinic at Visakha road who is now in remand over the death of Dr P. A. Priyangi said yesterday that Ministers, other politicians, film stars etc, were treated by him at his clinic, but refused to divulge their names.
The doctor said, "It is my fate that I have to be behind bars now."
He claimed that most of his woes were due to professional jealousy. "A classmate of mine who is also in the medical profession is behind the mud slinging campaign,"
Dr. Gamage charged.
Dr. Gamage said the
medical practitioners who condemned western medicine and sling mud at other doctors in the same profession would be exposed soon.
"An Opposition female Parliamentarian has engaged a lawyer as my defence counsel," he said.
Asked whether there was legal action instituted against him in the USA on a charge of sexual abuse, he said that two women who worked for him in his clinic in America had filed a plaint against him and he had been exonerated by courts.
"It is wrong to call it sexual abuse", he added.
"Some of those in the medical profession today make derogatory statements against me as I am popular, but if they think that I will give up my profession, that’s a wrong notion and the day I give up this practice there won’t be anyone to continue it," Dr Gamage said.
"Hundreds of thousands die in America due to medical negligence but I accept this incident to my fate," he said.
"My sisters told me that I was going through a malefic period and I was also informed that the female doctor who died at my clinic was also going through a bad period according to her horoscope," the doctor said.
Referring to Dr. Priyangi, he said: "I met her in June this year and she paid an advance of Rs. 10,000 before treatment and balance payment of Rs. 90,000 was paid on the fateful day.
But in America for such treatment something equaling to Rs. 850,000 is charged by cosmetic surgeons, Gamage said.
"What happened to me today could happen to another medical practitioner tomorrow, hence others in the profession should not run down fellow doctor at a time of misfortune," he said.
