GMOA President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya said the GMOA Executive Committee on August 21 had unanimously decided to bring to the notice of President Mahinda Rajapaksa that for want of a sound National Wage Policy wildcat strike, agitations against salary anomalies, personality clashes and other disputes had emerged.
The implementation of a National Wage Policy was essential to minimise such disputes and it would benefit not only the medical professionals but also the entire government workforce.
He said that the GMOA had brought to the notice of the President that the 1-4 salary ratio had caused many problems as regards the salary structures of the medical professionals as well as those of the government sector employees.
The GMOA had suggested to the President that instead of the 1-4 salary structure 1-12 salary structure was beneficial as it would help settle disputes, Dr. Padeniya said.
President Rajapaksa had accepted the 1-12 structure and with the concurrence of the Treasury Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundara and had approved it to be implemented. But the implementation process had been stagnating since 2006.
Dr. Padeniya said that the GMOA would again urge the relevant authorities, especially the Salaries and Cadre Commission to implement a National Wage Policy.
