The little boy, however, told the police that the beggar was his father, but his grandmother identified him at the Dambulla Police Station.
The Police Media Unit said that the beggar had claimed that the child was his, but he had been remanded till Nov. 03 after being produced before the Dambulla Magistrate.
The child was handed over to Abe Children’s home at Anuradhapura.
The Dambulla OIC said that they had acted on a tip-off given by a resident who had received one of the photographs of the child distributed by his parents.
The Dambulla police handed over the case to the Ambalangoda police as the complaint about the missing child had been lodged there last December. The Dambulla magistrate handed over the case to the Balapitiya Magistrate.
