External Affairs Ministry’s monitoring MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena asks whether President Mahinda Rajapaksa would have left the country on an official visit to Nepal if his government had been in crisis due to the then SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena’s defection.

Addressing a series of meetings at Balapitiya, Ahungalle and Dodanduwa during the past few days, MP Gunawardena said that President Rajapaksa had left for Nepal on Nov. 25, just four days after Maithripala Sirisena had switched his allegiance to what the chief SLFP organiser for Balapitiya called a satanic alliance hell- bent on causing havoc.

Had the government been plunged into crisis as propagated by various interested parties, the President wouldn’t have attended the 18th SAARC summit, the MP said. MP Gunawadena accompanied the President.

Incumbent President Rajapaksa’s victory at January 8, 2015 presidential poll would ensure an undivided country, whereas Maithripala Sirisena’s camp included elements openly supportive of separatist ideology, Vaas said.

Referring to a recent Al Jazeera programme that had dealt with the upcoming presidential election, MP Gunawardena said Maithripala Sirisena’s camp wanted to facilitate a project undertaken by pro-LTTE diaspora to haul up President Rajapaksa before an international war crimes tribunal.

UK based Global Tamil Forum (GTF) spokesman Suren Surendiran declared on Al Jazeera that President Rajapaksa would be taken before The Hague based International Criminal Court (ICC) immediately after his defeat. MP Gunawardena accused UNP National Leader Ranil

Wickremesinghe of always throwing his weight behind those who propagated separatist sentiments.

The SLFPer expressed confidence that patriotic people in the Galle District would never betray the confidence President Rajapaksa had in them.

MP Gunawardena regretted Maithripala Sirisena giving leadership to Opposition campaign after having stabbed the President in the back. The MP said Maithripala Sirisena’s action was nothing but an affront to the patriotic people of Polonnaruwa and the whole country.

Addressing meetings in the Galle district, MP Gunawardena recalled the atrocities committed by the UNP and the JVP during the late 1980s. How could UNPers and the JVPers work together knowing brutal acts committed at the behest of their respective leaderships. The likes of Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sajith Premadasa as well as Anura Kumara Dissnayake had conveniently forgotten their culpability for crimes committed at that time, the MP alleged.

MP Gunawardena said that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Maithripala Sirisena couldn’t influence those who had lost loved ones due to atrocities committed by the LTTE, the JVP and the UNP. Regardless of the heavy propaganda campaign targeting the President, the people would continue to love him and always respect him as the one who gave political leadership to bring the war to a successful conclusion. Opportunists could never deprive President Rajapaksa of that credit whatever they propagated here and abroad, the MP said.

The MP said that those who had been demanding accountability and good governance from President Rajapaksa were silent when the then President Ranasinghe Premadasa provided arms, ammunition as well as funds to the LTTE. Wickremesinghe’s administration immediately after having returned to power in Dec 2001 betrayed a secret operation run by the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI), MP Gunawardena said. The UNP never took responsibility for its actions, though the entire country realized how that political party undermined national security.
