The New York Times has reported that Sri Lanka under the new government of President Maithripala Sirisena can make progress in the future overcoming all obstacles.

In its Editorial the paper has said that Sri Lanka stands to gain much from the international community through next month’s Human Rights sessions in Geneva where a submission on alleged war crimes will be taken up.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s representative in Geneva Ravinatha Ariyasinghe has said in a statement that the country will leave no room for a repeat of what happened in the past.

He said the fact that all communities and religions were represented at the 67th Independence Day celebrations was proof that the future looks bright for the country.

He said it was the responsibility of all communities to ensure the country marches forward overcoming all obstacles.

He further added that the Lessons Learnt Commission had given the international community a manifestation and that the people, with the end of the LTTE, have an opportunity to face the challenges positively.
