Decreased production of hydro power causes frequent power cuts

Power failures in several areas of the island were reported yesterday (24th).According to our reporters said that such failures had occurred in the Kandy and Ampara districts.

In response to a query on this CEB Chairman Anura Wijepala said that such short power cuts could occur as a result of decrease in production at hydro power plants.

Currently the water capacity the island's hydro power plant linked reservoirs hold is about 40
In view of this the CEB requests that thrift use of electricity be continued. Reports of power failures were reported recently as a result of the Biyagama and Minuwangoda transformer explosion and the Norochcholai Power Plant failure.

However, the Norochcholai Power Plant has been brought to normalcy by now. Yet, uninterrupted power supply has become a challenge as a result of the decrease of the hydro power production which is the second largest electricity source.
