Explosions in Athugala Kanda, Kurunegala

It has been determined that the explosion that took place at Athugala rock in Kurunegala yesterday, was due to excessive heat that has been prevalent.

The portion that exploded was the section close to the stairway leading to Aetha-gala near the North-Western Provincial Council Building complex.

Two spots on the rock were found to have split with eruptions extending over n a 50-metre stretch.

Several residents said that the rock exploded at about 10 p.m. on Saturday (19).

A team from the National Building Research Institute's Landslide Division had visited the site to probe the explosion.

Similarly reports say that several rock layers have been displaced.
