The SSP told The Island that the victim had not come forward to lodge a complaint until last night, but the police would investigate the incident further after recording statements from eyewitnesses.
The victim had fought with another woman in public and they had traded abuse and had then hurled a stone at the suspect police officer who intervened to settle the dispute, the Police Spokesman said.
The interdicted sergeant had been assigned to work in the town police post at the time of the incident, he said.
Meanwhile, the victim has told Derana TV that she was assaulted because she had refused to have sex with the assailant.
Her husband said that his wife feared to get admitted to hospital for treatment though she had vomited blood since the assault.
