Meanwhile, the Spokesman for the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) at the time Dr. Chandika Epitakaduwa when contacted yesterday said that his union had only stepped in at the time to ensure due process, as there was a massive outcry against Dr. Balage. Several sections of society had accused him without allowing justice to run its course, he said.
However, now that he had been found guilty by a court of law, the GMOA had nothing more to say, Dr. Epitakaduwa said.
The former GMOA spokesman said however that the GMOA had been unfairly accused of attempting to influence one of the chief witnesses in the case over a separate incident that followed. A consultant of the Negombo Hospital had requested certain members of the cleaning staff of a private janitorial service to refrain from eating inside the hospital’s operating theater. The witness, too, was among those who had been advised by him, Dr. Epitakaduwa added.
