Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday warned that unless the leaders of main political parties advised their activists to refrain from violence, he would be compelled to postpone the election to the Uva PC scheduled for September 20.
Meanwhile, Registered voters who had not received their polling cards so far were advised to remain indoors as postal authorities were carrying out a special delivery.
Post Master General (PMG) Rohana Abeyaratne said that delivery of polling cards would continue until next Friday. Anyone who had not received the polling card should go to nearest Post/Sub post office and obtain it after proper identification.
Deshapriya said that he could only hope that IGP N. K. Illangakoon would give strict instructions to his subordinates to take immediate steps to curb the violence in the Uva province, especially the Moneragala district.
"Similarly, I urge the General Secretaries of the main political parties to caution their candidates and party activists against resorting to violence", he said.
