It has been decided to present the final consensus on the 20th amendment containing the new election system at the next cabinet meeting.

A Government Minister said that this was further discussed at the cabinet meeting held yesterday.

The draft 20th amendment about the new election system was presented at the cabinet meeting last week.

On that occasion it was decided that a cabinet sub-committee should obtain the views of political parties further and submit them to the cabinet meeting.

Accordingly a five member sub-committee comprising Ministers, S. B. Dissanayake, Sarath Amunugama, Paatali Champika Ranawaka, Rishaad Badiudeen, Rauf Hakeem, Kabeer Hasheem and Lakshman Kiriella was also appointed.

However representatives of the sub-committee concerned said at the cabinet meeting held yesterday that still the problem with regard to the number of parliamentary seats persisted.

Accordingly it had been stated that discussions were being held further as to whether according to the new election system the number of parliamentary seats should be 225 or 255.

Meanwhile a special discussion for briefing about the 20th amendment pertaining to the new election system was held yesterday with Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya at the chair.

Political party representatives and Election Monitoring networks also participated in the discussion.

MP. R. Yogarajan who participated in the discussion representing the UNP told our news team that new proposals had been submitted even at the discussion held yesterday.
