In a bid to resolve issues between the President Maithripala Sirisena and the United National Party (UNP), President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe are to meet today, government sources say.

Issues such as the 20th Amendment, dissolving parliament and the no faith motions tabled before parliament are to be taken up, sources add.

Meanwhile, minister Karu Jayasuriya, UNP Assistant Leader - Ravi Karunanayake and party General secretary Kabir Hashim has met with the President yesterday and discussed the issues faced by the government.

Today's meeting with the President and the Prime minister is a continuation of that meeting.

Parliament dissolved in early July

Dissolving parliament once the 20th amendment was passed was taken up during the discussion.

At the present, the President had already declared in public as well as before international leaders that a new government would be established in September.

However, according to the Elections secretariat, parliament should be dissolved before July 10 in order to to do so.

If it should be the case, a General election can be held before the end of August, a spokesperson of the Elections secretariat said.
