Susil Premajayantha says that he had formally informed president Maithripala Sirisena of his resignation as the general secretary of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
The resignation states that the Mr. Premajayantha has resigned with effective from yesterday (24).
In his letter, Mr .Premajayantha says he was not actively involved in any decision making process over the recent days due the legal limitations imposed, while serving as the general secretary of the UPFA.
He also says that he is saddened by the fact that representatives of political parties that partnered with the UPFA have not understood the current situation and have misled the public by making various statements to the media.
He adds that he is disappointed over the actions of certain UPFA stakeholders who failed to speak on keeping the UPFA together in order to secure 95 seats in parliament.
