President accused over sons’s participation in tour

Social media is strongly criticizing president Maithripala Sirisena for having permitted participation of his son Daham in his tour to address the UN general assembly.

The media has carried pictures of the president at the UNGA, along with ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Wijedasa Rajapakse as well as his son seated close to him.

Social media is questioning as to on what capacity Daham had been included in the UN tour, with queries raised as to whether there is any difference now, from the past.

Nepotism was one of the key slogans of Sirisena in criticizing the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime before his election, with a promise to end family favouritsm.

As member of president’s staff

President Sirisena took his son along with him in his Indian tour too.

Head of the president’s media Dharma Sri Ekanayake in New York said Daham was participating as a member of the president’s personal staff.

The first lady nor any other family member is attending, while the total presidential entourage, with ministers and media, is only around 30, he added.
