A Senior lecturer at the Rajarata University Dr. Channa Jayasumana says the once prohibited Gliposate is still circulating in the market.

He said that this herbicide imported by a leading company has being released to the market stealthily.

The use of Gliposate was banned in Sri Lanka after it was identified as a root cause for Kidney disease.

The Registrar General of Herbicide prohibited the use of Glyposate in several provinces including Rajarata for the first time on December 22, 2014.

Later the Finance Ministry instructed the Controller of Import and Export to impose a total ban on it on June 11, 2015.

However Glyposate was completely banned on October 23, 2015. Accordingly, power has been vested in police to arrest those who posses or sell Glyposate.

Meanwhile, the police seized 187 cans of Glyposate from a secret store of a shop at Wanathawilluwa in Puttalam last Wednesday.

The retail price of this stock has been marked as 6 thousand 500 rupees while its expiry date was marked as April 20, 2015.

However police investigations revealed that a can of this expired substance had been sold at 9 thousand rupees.
