Although a democratic country should have a powerful opposition, such a thing does not exist in the country today and that the opposition leader too, is fake. and therefore a new political party must be founded, he added.
Speaking at an interview with the 'BBC Sinhala Service', he had said it cannot be helped even if the SLFP is split to two.
"That is what is taught in history. The SLFP is a mere name. I think it is more important to think of the public's needs," he has added.
Mr. Rajapaksa said that the new leader of this party could be former President Mahinda Rajapaksa or another individual with his backing. Rajapaksa said that even he had been invited to lead if a new political party is founded.
He had also hinted that the new party could even function as an alliance.
