Minister Gunawardana began his political career with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party representing the Trincomalee district.
Minister MKADS Gunawardana held the portfolio of Deputy Minister of Buddha Sasana during the tenure of the United People’s Freedom Alliance led government and later pledged his allegiance to then common candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential election in January 2015.
Minister Gunawardana made immense contributions to the victory of President Maithripala Sirisena during the presidential election and was later elected to Parliament through the National List.
He was subsequently sworn in as the Minister of Lands.
The final funeral rites are to be performed at the Kanthale Leelarathna Stadium on the 23rd evening.
