Soldiers arrested over dismantling advertising boards

Chavakachcheri police yesterday (17) arrested eight soldiers who had been taking apart advertising boards along Kandy-Jaffna A-9 highway, to be sold as scrap iron.

Police had been on the lookout following complaints that those boards were going missing in the night.

The police spokesman’s office said the men, who had arrived in a vehicle, were arrested and later identified as members of the Army’s 6th signal corps.

Produced before the Chavakachcheri magistrate, each was enlarged on a Rs. 50,000 surety.

The case against them will be taken up on October 29, the police spokesman’s office said.
