Maithri takes election into his hands

President Maithripala Sirisena has taken up the responsibility of ensuring victory to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) at the upcoming local government elections, the 'Sath Handa' reports.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike is tasked with the reorganisation activities of the party targeting at the elections and the process will commence on November 01, the newspaper adds.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena commenced the social development project aiming 4 main subject areas on Thursday (15) from Anuradhapura.

He has taken the initiative to commence several projects parallel to the Anuradhapura District Special Development Committee Meeting.

'Pibidena Polonnaruwa'

A discussion on the development activities of Kandy district was held on the same day and yesterday (16) the President commenced a massive development project titled 'Pibidena Polonnaruwa' (The rising Polonnaruwa).

The four subject areas which the President is to provide his guidance are a drug-free country, prevention of kidney diseases, producing local food and protecting the environment. Accordingly number of special development projects will be carried out in each district.

Speeden up investigations

The President has advised the relevant units to speeden up investigations with regard to the irregularities that took place during the previous government’s rule.

These units have been especially advised to relaunch a special probe into the Avant Garde armoury case.

It is reported that a conflicting situation has emerged within the government with regard to the Avant Garde issue and that one group is attempting to sweep it under the rug.

It has been revealed that several ministers of the SLFP and United National Party (UNP) are among the group.

Under this backdrop, the President has advised the relevant authorities to show no leniency to anyone when conducting the said investigations.

Ministers to be monitored

The President has also directed his attention towards appointing a special committee to investigate the allegations leveled against Ministers and MPs of the current government.

Meanwhile, the Presidenwith regard to the incident where a conflicting situation emerged as a director of Sri Lanka Telecom resigned the President has called a director of the institution and strictly advised the individual to be more vigilant.
