A government bigwig had ordered the ministers to find out who had leaked the information to the ’Sunday Times’ newspaper.
Although the Prime minister and ministers Mangala Samaraweera, Kabir Hashim and Malik Samarawickrama had emphasised that details of these bank accounts should not be revealed until investigations had concluded, someone had leaked the information.
Speaking at a cabinet media briefing on October 15, minister Rajitha Senaratne said that there are 08 bank accounts in Dubai belonging to VVIPs. He said that it is learnt that 03 accounts held US$ 1.086 billion, US$ 1.8 billion and US$ 500 million.
International investigations would reveal how cash had flowed into these accounts, he added.
However, he had also said that investigations could be hindered as such details have now been revealed.
Speaking on this regard, MP Namal Rajapaksa had said that he did not have any bank accounts in Dubai.
Responding, minister Rajitha has said that he had not told anyone that Namal owns bank accounts in Dubai, while hinting at 'putting the cap on if it fits'.
