A petition to Supreme Court against the attempt to increase the number of Taverns in Colombo

A petition was filed at the Supreme Court today, requesting to cancel a gazette that has been issued on the 18th of September, expanding the parameters for taverns within the city limit.

The petition filed by the Dharma Shakthi organization stated that the Colombo Divisional Secretary is preparing to call tenders to open new taverns; therefore the organization requests the Supreme Court to issue an interim order to prevent the attempt until this petition is heard.

The petition has been filed by a group of leaders from different religious denominations including the president of the Dharma Shakthi organization Madampagama Assaji Thera.

The Colombo Divisional Secretary, the Commissioner of the Excise Department and the Attorney General have been named as respondents.
